Our Mission
Girasol is dedicated to enhancing professional capabilities and nurturing connections that empower individuals operating at the crossroads of mental health and immigration. We provide training, consultations, and resources to develop a network of trauma-informed professionals committed to supporting immigrant families.
Our Values
Our offerings are grounded in dignity, anti-racism, and the decolonization of mental health.
Our History
Girasol was established in September 2018 as part of the Texas Institute Child and Family Wellbeing at the School of Social Work at UT Austin. This was the result of more than two years of dedicated volunteer work with immigrants in detention, as well as training for the professionals who assist them.
In September 2025, Girasol became an independent organization. This change marks an exciting new chapter, grounded in our unwavering commitment to immigration justice and fueled by the urgent need for trauma-informed, culturally responsive support for those working with immigrant communities. In an increasingly challenging political environment, we believe that greater independence will allow us to respond with more flexibility, deepen our impact, and expand our reach.
