Girasol
Noungir·a·sol | ˈxi·ɾa·sol A flower native to the Americas. The sunflower is considered to be a symbol of joy and life, but also one of loyalty and longevity. Standing up to twelve feet tall, these resilient flowers turn their faces to the sky and follow the sun throughout their daily journeys.
About Girasol
Girasol began in 2018 under the leadership of Anna Hernandez as a project within the Texas Institute for Child & Family Wellbeing (TXICFW) at the University of Texas at Austin, with the mission to support immigrant children and families through trauma-informed care, education, and community connection. It launched as a collaboration with nonprofit legal partners to serve immigrant women and children in detention in South Texas, and quickly expanded to include training for service providers and students on the intersections of migration and trauma. Girasol also played a key role in connecting immigrant communities with culturally responsive mental health and community-based resources.
On September 1, 2025, Girasol entered a new chapter as an independent organization — Girasol Organizational Support — under the leadership of Monica Romo, LCSW-S. This transition reflects an ongoing commitment to immigration justice and a recognition of the urgent need for flexible, community-rooted, trauma-informed support. As an independent entity, Girasol is deepening its impact through high-quality trainings, consultation, support groups, and speaking engagements — all grounded in an anti-racist, decolonial, and dignity-centered approach
